Bet on OU to embrace spoiler role vs. ‘Horns

Posted by GameSetMatch on 14th October 2009

Injuries — specifically the one to quarterback Sam Bradford — may have taken the luster off Oklahoma’s season and made their national championship hopes a moot point, but the spoiler role is still available.

While there’s no BCS national championship game in their future, there’s still the possibility of a BCS bowl game were they to end the season as Big 12 champion.

And what better way to take a major step toward that goal than by dragging hated rival and third-ranked Texas into the also-ran pool with them?

If I was a betting man — and, of course, what sportswriter ever, ever supports gambling, right? — I’d take the Sooners in this one for that simple fact alone. As Seinfeld’s Kosmo Kramer used to say, “Man, that’s some sweet action.”

Sooners really miss Gresham at TE

Posted by GameSetMatch on 16th September 2009

Good tight ends are like any other undervalued commodity. Their importance can be forgotten until they’re no longer around. No. 12 Oklahoma never took the importance of Jermaine Gresham for granted, because losing him for the season has had a tremendous and obvious impact on the Sooners’ offense this season.

“I coached in the National Football League and guys like Jermaine don’t come around very often. He’s a pretty special cat,” OU receivers coach Jay Norvell said. “When you lose a guy like him, it really hurts you.”

OU’s offense has been feeling that pain since a season-ending knee injury put Gresham on the shelf four days before the Sooners’ season opener against BYU.

The obvious indicator is the lack of any significant involvement by tight ends in the passing game. Through two games, only one of OU’s 34 completions thrown by either Landry Jones or Sam Bradford has been to a tight end.
