Randy Wolf’s debut for the Brewers was a success, Casey McGehee and Rickie Weeks homered and Milwaukee beat the Colorado Rockies 7-5 on Tuesday night.
Wolf (1-0) struck out eight in 6 2-3 innings in his first start since signing a $29.75 million, three-year contract in the offseason to bolster Milwaukee’s starting staff.
McGehee and Weeks did their part to help. McGehee hit a three-run homer in the first and Weeks added a solo shot off Rockies starter Greg Smith (0-1) in the fifth.
Trevor Hoffman gave up a run in a rocky ninth for his 592nd career save.
Milwaukee snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Rockies. Colorado’s Ian Stewart hit his second homer in as many days and doubled and tripled.

Last winter, the Brewers tweaked the roster. This time, they face the prospect of wholesale changes.
“There are a lot of question marks,” manager Ken Macha told reporters late in the season. “I think you’ll have a lot to write about.”
Macha himself was among those question marks before general manager Doug Melvin declared that Macha would be back in 2010. The coaching staff will see some changes — including the key pitching coach position — and the roster figures to see plenty.
It’s nothing new for Macha.
“When I managed in Oakland, we had free agents going left and right,” he said. “It was guys like [Jason] Giambi, [Miguel] Tejada, and all four years I was there I had a different closer. There was always movement there.

Casey McGehee entered Spring Training with only an outside chance to make the Brewers’ Opening Day roster. He entered September with a chance to win the third-base job for next season.
McGehee, a third baseman who has also seen time at second, won that Opening Day roster spot by hitting .328 in Spring Training and he hasn’t cooled yet. That’s despite playing most of the regular season with a right knee injury that requires treatment after every game.
McGehee hit a go-ahead home run in Thursday’s 4-3 win over the Cards to help the Brewers avoid getting swept by St. Louis, part of a three-RBI afternoon and a fabulous series. McGehee drove in nine of the Brewers’ 13 runs against the Cardinals.

Aside from a brief, early break to rest a strained hamstring, Felipe Lopez has played every game since the Brewers traded for him last month. He’d like to keep it that way.
That means he should be back atop the lineup on Friday, when the Brewers return from an off-day to begin a four-game series at Nationals Park. It will be one of Lopez’s many homecomings, since the Nationals are one of the six teams for which he’s played.
Lopez has not taken a game off since his Brewers tenure began, but whether he has taken a few plays off remains a matter for debate. Lopez finally provided an explanation this week for the two ground balls that eluded him on Aug. 11, drawing the ire of fans at Miller Park, saying, “I was cramping up really bad that day. Really bad.” The fans let him have it again two days later, when Lopez dropped an easy popup and cost the Brewers two runs.

Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder and Dodgers reliever Guillermo Mota were each levied fines by Major League Baseball but avoided suspensions for their actions during and after Tuesday’s game at Dodger Stadium, according to Brewers media relations director Mike Vassallo. Major League Baseball has not yet announced the penalties.
Mota hit Fielder with a pitch in retaliation, according to Dodgers catcher Russell Martin, for the Chris Smith offering two innings earlier that hit Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez. Fielder waited until after the game to vent his displeasure, charging to the door of the Dodgers’ clubhouse, followed by a group of teammates who eventually convinced him to return to the visitor’s side.

Brewers left-fielder Ryan Braun had four hits Monday including a three-run home run, but he was on the bench for the dramatic ninth-inning showdown between Trevor Hoffman and Manny Ramirez because of tightness in his right elbow.
Braun was hurt on a wild throw back to the infield in the seventh inning. He told manager Ken Macha that it didn’t bother him to hit, and Braun proved it with a single in the top of the ninth. Jody Gerut took Braun’s place in the bottom of the inning with the Brewers in control, 6-2.

The Milwaukee Brewers reacquired reliever Claudio Vargas from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday. The Dodgers got minor league catcher Vinny Rottino in the trade Friday between playoff contenders. The deal was completed hours before baseball’s non-waiver 4 p.m. ET deadline.
The 31-year-old Vargas was 0-0 with a 1.64 ERA in eight games for the NL West-leading Dodgers. The right-hander was on the disabled list for nearly three months because of elbow tendinitis, and was activated July 3. Vargas went 11-6 with a 5.09 ERA for Milwaukee in 2007 and was released before the start of the 2008 season. He is expected to join the Brewers on Saturday in San Diego.
Milwaukee entered Friday tied for third in the NL Central, four games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs.

Prince Fielder beat the hometown boppers on their own turf.
With Albert Pujols and Ryan Howard eliminated early, Fielder won baseball’s Home Run Derby on Monday night with a steady power display that included a jaw-dropping drive estimated at 503 feet. The Milwaukee Brewers’ first baseman outslugged Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz 6-5 in the finals at Busch Stadium to take home a title that St. Louis fans surely hoped would go to one of their own.

Three things are certain these days — death, taxes and Prince Fielder’s name in the starting lineup.
Barring a setback at this week’s Major League Baseball All-Star activities, you can bank on the fact that Fielder, who set a club record for the first half with 78 RBIs, will be back in the lineup Thursday, when the Brewers resume play with a four-game series in Cincinnati. Manager Ken Macha said Fielder could play all 162 games this season if he stays healthy.

The Brewers struggled to get a big hit all night, so Prince Fielder delivered a little one.
The slugging first baseman legged out an infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning, just enough for a 5-4 win over the Cardinals at Miller Park that gave the 33,655 fans on hand something to cheer about at the end of a mostly maddening night at the plate.
