He chose his words carefully, but first-year Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo made it clear after Sunday’s 42-6 loss to Indianapolis that he felt his team suffered a letdown in the fourth quarter.
That was a significant departure for Spagnuolo, who had stressed all season that the Rams always had fought to the finish despite the mounting losses.
After Monday’s film review of the game, Spagnuolo modified his opinion.
“I felt that … maybe it was a whole quarter that we (lacked) intensity,” he said. “But when I went back and looked at it, that’s not the case. It was probably three minutes of not quite the intensity that we had had.”

I’ve been covering the NFL for nearly 30 years, and I think the 2009 Rams are the worst non-expansion year team I’ve seen. Well, at least as they are right now, at this moment, sitting at 0-4 following an embarrassing 35-0 beating from the San Francisco 49ers. I could be wrong, of course. I didn’t sit here and do 12 hours of research to support my “worst ever” observation. That’s all it is; an observation. And this opinion can be revisited and updated in a few weeks, or at the end of the season, as more games are played, and as the Rams progress, or regress.
But I haven’t seen a mess as big as this for a long time.
The 2009 Rams aren’t entirely responsible for what happened last year — there are a lot of new players on the roster — but the fact is, the team has lost 14 consecutive games. That’s the longest current streak in the NFL and the longest streak in franchise history. They have lost the 14 in a row by an average of 17 points. In a competitive league where many games go right down to the wire, the Rams are routinely routed by the opposition.
What about the 2008 Detroit Lions? They went 0-16. So when we’re talking “worst,” they’re the leader in the clubhouse in terms of record. And if the Rams win a game or two, they won’t be the worst. But up to this point, the trend is ominous. At least the 2008 Lions scored points, around 15 per game. And those Lions had (and still have) a big-time playmaker at WR in Calvin Johnson. At least there was some sizzle. And the ‘08 Lions were competitive at times, losing five games by 8 points or less. Overall, the 2008 Lions lost their games by an average of 15 points. Through four games, the Rams have lost by an average of 21 points.

In the span of a decade, the Rams’ offense has morphed from the “Greatest Show on Turf” into what a Washington Post columnist declared after Sunday’s 9-7 loss to the Redskins is the “Most Miserable Mass on Grass.”
That might seem harsh. Still, a team averaging 3.5 points per game really has no grounds for complaint. As coach Steve Spagnuolo acknowledged, “On offense, you’re judged on how many points you score.”
In a way, the deck is stacked against the regrouping Rams. They’re trying to scratch out a productive attack under a first-time head coach whose background is entirely in defense, a first-time coordinator who brought in a new offense, and with an overhauled roster that is young and inexperienced in some key areas.

Rams defensive tackle Adam Carriker is back at practice after suffering an ankle injury, but the 2007 first-round draft pick is working with the third-string defense, at least for now.
Carriker injured his left ankle — the same one that bothered him last season — during a scrimmage Aug. 7. He returned to individual drills Monday, then resumed working out with the team Tuesday and Wednesday.
Gary Gibson and Clifton Ryan are the Rams’ first-team tackles for now. Gibson, 27, was signed as a free agent in April after two seasons in Carolina, where he played in 12 games with no starts. Ryan has started 12 of 32 career games, all with the Rams.

Quarterbacks like Marc Bulger sometimes don’t get a second chance. Rarely will they get a third.
EARTH CITY, Mo. – Quarterbacks like Marc Bulger sometimes don’t get a second chance.
Rarely will they get a third.
This isn’t lost on Bulger when the subject is broached inside an office at St. Louis Rams headquarters. The franchise has won just five games in two seasons — the NFL’s longest stretch of futility for a non-expansion team since the 1995-1996 New York Jets. That’s usually enough losing to trigger a change under center. Bulger got a mulligan last offseason when the Rams passed on drafting Matt Ryan, instead selecting DE Chris Long No. 2 overall. But after another miserable season, the Rams could very well have opted to start from scratch at the position.
