Mr. Rodgers’ Neighborhood: Packers Ready To Make Leap

Posted by sasilverandblack on 19th January 2011

Aaron Rodgers is gradually beginning to get mentioned in the conversation with the best quarterbacks in today’s game. Last week’s dominating performance against the 13-3 Falcons advanced that reasoning even further. Rodgers picked apart the stagnant Falcon D, en route to a 31-36, 366 yard, and four touchdown performance in the 48-21 demolition.

The Packers needed the week 17 victory against the Bears just to get in to the playoffs, but now that they are here, they are having a field day. The undrafted Tramon Williams has morphed into a big play corner. He has three picks and two forced fumbles through two playoff games. No interception was bigger than the pick of Michael Vick in the end zone to ice the game. And then there was the interception return for a touchdown to sway momentum before the half against the Falcons. There is no doubt Jay Cutler will have to watch where he is on the field. He could turn into DeAngelo Hall, who picked Cutler off four times during the early pat of the season.

What’s more impressive is the resilience through the uncertainty. The Packers got to where they are despite losing 15 players to injury throughout the season, six of which were starters. Rodgers even missed a few games with a lingering concussion. But through it all, they are in the final four. Mike McCarthy certainly deserves to be in the conversation for coach of the year considering everything the team has endured.

The Bears may have an antidote for Rodgers potent passing attack in Julius Peppers. The Pro Bowl defensive end’s pass rush is one of the best in the league. Both defenses pose some problems for the opposing offense. The Packers’ Clay Matthews’ presence will be huge in both the pass and run game. It will be interesting to see who will get the upper hand on defense. Rodgers and the offense doesn’t have a cakewalk either, but he has a definitive advantage.

Rodgers’ escape ability is what really puts him over the top. Besides Vick, he is the best at avoiding a sack. That will have to be put on display if Rodgers wants to remain upright.

The Packers have been fighting for their lives throughout the entire season. Their desperation and perseverance kept them in the playoff race during the season and has driven them to success in the playoffs. And who knew who James Starks was before this season? Titletown has an opportunity to live up to its name with the upcoming grudge match with the biggest rivalry in football.

Harris says he’ll return this season

Posted by GameSetMatch on 3rd June 2010

Packers cornerback Al Harris said Wednesday he will be back on the field with Green Bay this year after major knee injury abruptly ended last season.

In his first comments in the Packers locker room since the injury, Harris said he never thought about calling it quits.

“There’s no doubt in my mind. If there were, then I wouldn’t be here, standing here now,” the 13-year veteran said after the second of four public organized team activities this offseason.

Harris tore a ligament in his left knee on Nov. 22 against the 49ers while defending San Francisco wide receiver Michael Crabtree. He needed season-ending surgery and there had been questions whether the veteran would return.

Harris said it was tough to watch Green Bay lose to the Arizona Cardinals in the first round of the playoffs in January.

“That was hard, the bits and pieces that I did watch,” he said. “It’s still hard to watch, even watching practice. But that’s a part of it, and that fuels you, to watch the guys go out there and work, to watch your friends play cohesive as a group.

Havner arrested following crash

Posted by GameSetMatch on 17th March 2010

Green Bay Packers tight end Spencer Havner was arrested this week on suspicion of drunken driving after crashing his motorcycle in Northern California, suffering a broken shoulder blade.

The California Highway Patrol says the 27-year-old Havner was arrested Monday after the accident about 2:45 a.m. some 50 miles north of Sacramento.

Mark Humenik, whose agency represents Havner, says the player should be “fully recovered in short order.” Messages left with the Packers and the NFL were not immediately returned Wednesday.

The district attorney’s office in Nevada County, Calif., say they are awaiting the police report before deciding whether to file any charges against Havner.

Former LB Havner now pass-catching threat for Pack

Posted by GameSetMatch on 6th November 2009

Nobody expected the Spencer Havner experiment to work out quite like this – not even Havner himself.

Three months after coaches let the backup linebacker begin taking snaps at tight end in training camp, Havner has become a bona fide pass catching threat.

Making the most of his increased playing time in the wake of an injury to tight end Jermichael Finley, Havner has caught three touchdowns in the Packers’ past two games, tying him with Donald Driver for the team lead.

“All he does is catch touchdowns,” quarterback Aaron Rodgers said.

Not bad for a guy whose standout career as a linebacker at UCLA previously led him to nothing more than life on the fringe of the NFL with three separate stints on the Packers’ practice squad.

Packers have easy time with Lions

Posted by rsanrel on 19th October 2009

The Green Bay Packers moved back toward their roots in the West Coast offense with good, but not great, results.

They surely accomplished their most important goal on Sunday at Lambeau Field, beating the under-talented and short-handed Detroit Lions 26-0 in a game that was about as easy as wins come in the NFL.

But the Packers also are searching for the rhythm to an offense that figured to be one of the NFL’s best but instead has been underwhelming early in the 2009 season.

To that end, they turned to more of a short, ball-control passing game that moved the ball with far more ease (435 yards) than in the previous four games.

But it was far from an unmitigated success because of familiar problems that have short-circuited them since the start of the regular season, namely penalties (seven on offense) and leaky pass protection that though improved from their last game at Minnesota, still allowed five sacks.

Packers work out OT Levi Jones

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th September 2009

The Packers worked out former Cincinnati Bengals left tackle Levi Jones on Monday, a source confirmed.

The NFL Network first reported the news on its website.

Jones, 30, was let go by the Bengals in May shortly after the team drafted Andre Smith out of Alabama with the sixth overall pick.

The 6-foot-5, 307-pound Jones was the 10th overall pick in 2002 out of Arizona State. He started 89 games the previous seven seasons for the Bengals.

The Packers wanted to gauge where Jones is at in the event starting left tackle Chad Clifton, who sprained an ankle against the Bengals, is out for an extended period of time.

Concerns at safety lead Packers to release Rouse, sign Giordano

Posted by GameSetMatch on 25th September 2009

Walking toward his new locker in Lambeau Field, Matt Giordano had to quickly glance up at the nameplate to make sure he was in the right spot.

As of Wednesday morning, Giordano was in and Aaron Rouse was out — the latest surprise shake-up to the Green Bay Packers’ secondary. And by Sunday’s game in St. Louis, Giordano needs to be ready to play for his new team in an unfamiliar scheme.

“It’s definitely an opportunity,” said Giordano, who played with the Indianapolis Colts the previous four seasons. “But the thing that I’ve got to do right now is just retain as much information, know the defense as quickly as possible and just execute my assignment right now.”
