Even as the losses piled up, Trey Hillman never lost the respect of his players or the Kansas City Royals’ management.
It was evident in the way the Royals allowed him to manage one last game, in the tears that filled general manager Dayton Moore’s eyes as he spoke about the man he hired to rebuild a struggling franchise.
Those losses were just too hard to overlook.
The Royals needed a change and, tough as it was, Hillman had to take the fall.
Hillman became the first manager to get fired this season, bowing out with a graceful exit and a win in his final game on Thursday.
Former Milwaukee Brewers manager Ned Yost will move from the front office to replace Hillman in the dugout for the remainder of the season.

Before you even ask, yes — Luke Hochevar’s bruised left ankle is fine.
At least that’s what Hochevar, who starts for the Royals tonight against Detroit, has been saying since he was hit by a line drive in his last outing, an exhibition loss to Texas on Friday.
“It’s not even an issue,” Hochevar said after Monday’s 8-4 loss to Detroit at Kauffman Stadium. “I haven’t felt it since I got hit. There’s no swelling, no bruising.”
It’s a good thing the ankle is the least of his concerns right now. This is clearly a big year for Hochevar, and the last thing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 draft needs is a distraction. He’s trying to get off to a strong start and put a disappointing 2009 season behind him.

Say, wait a minute. Maybe having the Detroit Tigers for the 2010 Opening Day opponent is a good idea for the Royals after all. The Tigers have become tame tabbies for the Royals.
Alberto Callaspo, David DeJesus and Miguel Olivo each belted a three-run homer as the Royals stomped the Tigers, 11-1, in front of 20,442 fans on Tuesday night at Comerica Park. It was Kansas City’s seventh victory in the past eight games — and four of them have come over the guys wearing the old English “D.”
Royals right-hander Robinson Tejeda went five innings for his second consecutive win over the Tigers and got four scoreless innings of backing from the bullpen.

Right-hander Gil Meche’s season seems to be over and righty Brian Bannister’s status is still uncertain, Royals manager Trey Hillman said on Thursday. Hillman said Meche has inflammation in his right shoulder. He hasn’t pitched since Aug. 29 at Seattle.
“Likely, he won’t pitch in a ballgame the rest of the season,” Hillman said.
Bannister, also out with right shoulder fatigue, will seek a second opinion.
“Banny is going to New York tomorrow — they’ve made a diagnosis here and, just as many athletes do, he just wants to get a second opinion,” Hillman said.
He declined to elaborate on the diagnosis on Bannister, who last pitched at Oakland on Sept. 2, when he left the game in the second inning.

Zack Greinke had never had such a strikeout pitch working. Nor had any pitcher in the Royals’ 41-year history.
Greinke struck out 15 Indians on Tuesday night as the Royals ended a five-game skid, 6-2, and earned a standing ovation from 17,353 fans at Kauffman Stadium. Greinke broke the club record of 14 strikeouts set by Mark Gubicza against Minnesota on Aug. 27, 1988.
And he did it in just eight innings. To hear Greinke tell it, it was a simple thing.
“My plan was to get ahead with pitches, and once you get ahead, to finish it,” Greinke said.

Gil Meche has yet to return to the form that made him a stalwart on Kansas City’s pitching staff earlier this season. In two starts since missing a month with an ailing back, he hasn’t even lasted beyond the fifth inning.
But five innings was all Meche needed on Tuesday night to pick up a victory against the White Sox. Although Meche didn’t pitch his best, he received plenty of help, both offensively and defensively, and left with a one-run lead that held up in a 5-4 victory at U.S. Cellular Field.
“The way I pitched, yeah, it was really nice to come out with a win,” Meche said. “I didn’t really throw any pitches with consistency the whole night. I was everywhere. The fastball wasn’t good. I didn’t feel bad. I just had no life on the ball. Just trying to stay in there as much as I could. It wasn’t pretty, like I said, but it got a ‘W.’”
