“When Blues owner Dave Checketts delivered his “It’s time to win” speech on Nov. 13, team President John Davidson was standing just a few feet away.
In three-plus seasons in St. Louis, Davidson has attained credibility among Blues fans with his communication skills and honesty. But Davidson had no qualms about taking a step back for a day and allowing Checketts to vent his frustration.
“One thing about Dave, he understands sports,” Davidson said. “He’s got a résumé to back that up. He cares as much, if not more, than anybody. As the man in charge, he has the right to give his opinion. I’m all for it.
“To me, if he didn’t understand sports and he made wild statements, I’d shudder … it would aggravate me. In fact, I wouldn’t work for him. But this is a real, true sportsman.”
The night after Checketts’ message, the Blues played a hard-fought game but lost 3-1 to San Jose. Since then, the Blues are 4-1-1, earning nine of 12 possible points.”

Brandon Jennings knew it was a gamble. So far, all the odds have been in the rookie’s favor.
Jennings made a swipe and slam past two stunned Nets during a 15-0 run to start the second half, Andrew Bogut and Carlos Delfino each scored 21 points, and the Milwaukee Bucks beat winless New Jersey 99-85 on Wednesday night.
“He saw the whole thing develop,” Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. “That was a big momentum break for us. It was a big steal and you got to see the little fella down there dunk the ball.”
Jennings, who jammed a finger and got kneed twice that left him limping in the fourth quarter, said he took a beating against the Nets. But his nifty steal between Chris Douglas-Roberts and Rafer Alston was the more demoralizing blow.

The Cardinals see left fielder Matt Holliday as a unique talent within this year’s free agent pool, and they apparently do not envision themselves as bidders for the market’s presumptive second choice should Holliday defect.
General manager John Mozeliak confirmed Tuesday that the Cardinals’ priority signing would shift away from offense if Holliday proves too pricey for the club to retain.
“We’ll see how the market develops,” Mozeliak said. “Is (Jason Bay) a possibility? Sure. But right now it’s fair to say he’s not one of our top priorities.”
The Cardinals have yet to submit a formal bid to Holliday’s agent, Scott Boras, and are unlikely to do so until free agents can begin accepting bids from all clubs on Saturday. The Cardinals continue to view Holliday as their offseason priority but have also constructed alternatives with starting pitching, not hitting, as a centerpiece.

The St. Louis Blues believed they were due for a breakout game at home. Andy McDonald, Brad Boyes and David Perron paved the way for an offensive outburst.
The trio combined for 10 points, with Perron recording his first NHL hat trick, Boyes netting a goal and three assists, and McDonald contributing a goal and two assists in his 500th career game.
It added up to St. Louis’ 6-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night.
The Blues, who were 1-5-1 in their first seven home games, scored four times in the first 7:36 — including Perron’s two goals in a span of 1:54.
“We hadn’t played real well at home,” said Boyes, who nearly matched his season total of six points. “It was a tough building to play in last year. We’ve got to get that way again. This was a good way to get going.”

Larry Johnson’s record-breaking career as a Kansas City running back is over.
The Chiefs confirmed Monday that they had run out of patience with his off-the-field problems and released Johnson the day he was due to come back from his second suspension in a year.
Johnson, who turns 30 on Nov. 19, was just 75 yards away from breaking Priest Holmes’ team rushing record.
The decision by the Chiefs (1-7) was not a surprise.
“A part of him is excited and a part of him is very regretful,” Johnson’s agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press. “There’s a lot of feelings going on right now. It’s analogous to breaking up with a girlfriend. Maybe you saw it coming, but it still hurts when it happens.”
