St. Louis Blues’ Erik Johnson is eager to start a new season

The hardest part was the call.
After being informed the freak injury he suffered playing golf would erase his second NHL season and might possibly endanger his entire career, Erik Johnson was devastated, incredulous and, ultimately, just plain scared.
In the midst of that emotional avalanche, the 20-year-old Blues defenseman had to call his parents in Bloomington, Minn., and tell them what happened.
“That was really difficult,” Johnson said, his expression reflecting the gravity of the situation. “I didn’t know how to tell my parents. I got all emotional. That was one of the toughest things I’ve ever had to do.”
Peggy Johnson was shopping at Macy’s that day when her cell phone rang. Her son most often stays in touch by texting. A voice call was out of the ordinary and immediately, exposed in the tone of his voice, she knew something was wrong.
